Responsibilities

The Consultant, Scientific Development Communications is responsible for creating, in partnership with the Advisor of Discovery and Innovation Communications, a proactive strategy to creatively communicate Lilly’s narrative, focusing on the company’s Discovery and Innovation story. The consultant will work cross-functionally to identify unique opportunities to promote Lilly’s narrative externally to enhance visibility and understanding of Lilly’s scientific developments and how they connect to the innovative work within Lilly Research Laboratories. The Consultant will be responsible for implementing the strategy, creating key content and deliverables and providing measurable results. The Consultant will lead communications around issues management as well as proactive company announcements, including Phase I and II readouts and new and emerging pipeline assets.

Reporting to the Advisor, Discovery and Innovation Communications, this role will be part of a team of strategic communicators within the Lilly Corporate Affairs department. The position will collaborate closely with colleagues across global communications to support an enterprise focus and help ensure external communications efforts are consistent and incorporate key messages and themes. Critical to the Consultant’s success will be close collaboration with counterparts in Content, Creative and Digital Channel communications, Enterprise communications and BUCA communications.

The consultant will have a strong understanding of scientific communications, proven communications counselling and media relations skills, and experience navigating the complexity of a highly matrixed, global company.

Key Objectives/Deliverables

  • In partnership with the Discovery and Innovation Communications Advisor, create a communications plan that drives alignment with the overall Global Communications strategy, and creatively communicates Lilly’s scientific advancements – specifically focused on what these advancements mean for the scientific process and ultimately the patient. Responsible for execution and implementation of the plan.

  • Develop and execute media relations strategy, in partnership with both Discovery and Innovation and Corporate Communications colleagues, focused on leveraging milestones to build upon Lilly’s innovation narrative being led by the Consultant, Innovation Communications.

  • Support the Discovery and Innovation Communications Director and collaborate with Discovery and Innovation Communications team members to drive a complete communications strategy.

  • Work flexibly to share work across the Discovery and Innovation Communications team, as needed.

  • With strategic direction from the Discovery and Innovation Communications Director and in partnership with Corporate Communications, Discovery and Innovation Communications and Public Affairs Communications, help deliver external communications that are more streamlined, creative, connective and forward-looking.

  • Develop content to support strategies and initiatives – including but not limited to press releases, key messages, standby statements – for relevant scientific development topics.

  • Stay informed of external environment and flag issues and trends.

  • Evaluate and recommend new ideas to drive Lilly’s voice externally.

  • Collaborate with Enterprise communications colleagues to promote the narrative for Lilly Research Labs leveraging internal communications channels

  • Using the corporate narrative and other key communications materials, develop scripts and talking points for executive leadership.

  • Partner with and provide direction to external agencies and vendors, as needed.

  • Use analytics to measure results, adjust tactics and content to continually improve.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Public Relations or related field

  • 5+ years of diverse communications experience within corporate or public relations agency environments

Additional Skills/Preferences

  • Pharmaceutical or healthcare experience and expertise

  • Corporate communications or external communications experience, scientific or health care communications experience preferred

  • Proven success and comfort interacting with media/reporters

  • Proven success coordinating multiple enterprise-wide initiatives

  • Demonstrated ability to influence peers and internal leaders at significantly higher levels of the organization.

  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams across a matrixed organization.

  • Superb communication skills – including verbal, written and presentation skills – that can help inform and persuade a wide range of audiences

  • Effective project management skills, including the ability to prioritize, multi-task and make appropriate trade-off decisions.

  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills with quick learning capabilities.

  • Ability to be a flexible team player, act quickly and meet deadlines with the highest ethical and business standards.

  • Proven ability to be innovative and creative, and knowledgeable about new communications trends.

  • Proven track record in providing strategic, persuasive and appropriate communications counsel.

  • Ability to manage issues and remain calm under pressure.

  • Meticulous attention to detail, with ability to grasp and focus on the big picture.

  • Vast project management capability that includes process development and improvement, communications of best practices, and measurement.
