Aerotek Assistant Machine Operator in Terre Haute, Indiana

Description:

Assistant Machine Operators will be responsible for a variety of duties in the conversion area. They will be responsible for moving raw materials/finished product around the facility (sometimes on a sit-down forklift) to prepare for production or outbound shipment, load the machine with raw material, visual and physical quality checks, and more. Candidates will also use the computer to help operate or troubleshoot at times and interact with the maintenance team to troubleshoot any issues.

Essentially, this person will do everything but operate the machine towards getting product out the door. The Terre Haute facility makes "overwraps" for a variety of industries. Overwraps are the flexible plastic material that holds a 24 pack of water together, a 36 pack of toilet paper together, or contains 36 pack of individual packaged Lays bags.

The conversion department literally "Converts" the printed plastic rolls (meaning the brands, ink, and prints are already on the plastic). This department takes the large plastic rolls, and converts them to the finished product "overwraps". The machine pulls the plastic through the machine at a quick pace and mold/shapes them into the outwrap bag. These machines are continuous (when running) and more or less look like a bunch of giant rolling pins with plastic film weaving in and out.

The goal for these people in to become machine operators down the road, and they will be trained starting day 1 on all things converting with great opportunity for advancement. The manager says that the first 6 months of work at Amcor in this role is considered training, so if people ask.. their training never really ends. This is the entry point.

  1. Obtains job information from off-going Assistant Machine Operator at the start of the shift, and checks machine to be sure area is clean.

  2. Reads order carefully and thoroughly. Assistant will note any special instructions, roll wrapping guide and question anything that is unclear.

  3. Keeps the supply of boxes made up for the next shift.

  4. Checks each roll ticket before wrapping to ensure order numbers are correct and roll numbers are in sequence.

  5. Maintain a clean, safe work area. Sweep, pick up trash and empty trash containers as needed.

  6. Maintains self and work area to comply with Good Manufacturing Practices and other prerequisite food safety programs

  7. Passes job information on to incoming shift Assistant Operator.

  8. Keeps records as required.

  9. Reports malfunctions, damaged or worn out equipment to Crew Leader immediately.

UNION:

This is a union environment, and there are a TON of very veteran folks at Amcor that know exactly what they are doing. This is a place that people get in, and don't leave. A lot of the machine operator opportunity over the next 12 months is due to retirees vacating spots.

Shift & Pay:

2nd Shift = 3pm-11pm M-F

3rd Shift = 11pm-7am M-F (starts on Sunday night)
